A Sit-down with BDM Waju; The Voice from the southside.

BDM Waju

Love4Waju (or BDM Waju as he is popularly known) has been among the few upcoming artistes from Edo state striving to establish their name on the nigerian music scene. The Afrobeats/Afrotrap artiste has steadily been trying to build his name in his hometown of Benin City,Edo state. Though he hasn’t been heard all around Benin,Love4Waju is an artiste that has brought a breath of Fresh air to the Edo State Music scene with his sound. After our article about him last year, wanting to know about his plans for his Career and his Independent Record Label NBH(Neighborhood Heros),I asked for an interview with him earlier this year,he agreed and we scheduled it for mid January but few days to he called me and told me that for several reasons he couldn’t make it and so we had to reschedule. We finally decided to have the interview on the last week of February. He invited me to a Hotel around his hood,Love4Waju was donning a Red Hoodie and a big smile when he saw me,apparently he was happy to see me and I was equally happy to see him too. We quickly settled in the Exterior bar for our interview.

“Last year was not really a busy one for you in terms of your music..Some of your fans have complained about you not dropping more records and most especially Videos. What are your intentions this year for your career and for the Whole NBH team. Are you planning on producing more Records and shooting more videos Or is it still going to be like last year?”

“Yeah I know that we didn’t really put out much last year.We are working on releasing more videos. Me and my team are working on having a couple of shows and being more in the public in terms of our music. We intend to create and put out more content this year. Our in-house Team is fully ready for the task ahead this year. We’ve set a goal on the number of videos we intend to put out and we are very devoted to achieving it”.

“You’ve had a track with Favi who is also from Benin and repping Afro-Drip.After hearing your song with Favi,I was impressed with him so I checked more of his music, and I can say he is good and he is repping the City real well. Both of you comment on each others post on Instagram. It seems as if you are in a Good relationship with Favi. Is it just strictly Business or do You guys have a Personal Relationship?”

“I actually Met with Favi in school,University of Benin, and from there we grew a relationship.I discovered he had passion for music and that kind of grew our relationship stronger. Since Uni days We’ve had a good relationship since, both personal and Business. So it’s been like that till now.Yeah…me and Favi are cool.

“You have been versatile in your Music so far, juggling between trap, Afrobeats. and even doing drill. What is your plan for this year, are you planning on continuing “juggling” your music or do you plan to stick to a certain Genre?”

“I’m focusing on Afrobeats this year, last year was mainly about Trap.since “No drama” I’ve been going hard on trap but I feel like doing mostly Afrobeats this year. I just want to be more focused on it and put out more Afrobeats tracks. My music is all about Afro-Fusion,whatever music I’m doing I always want to add my Afro Elements, that’s why NEIGHBORHOOD HEROS is all About Afro-Fusion.

“Not many artistes from Edo State have actually gone on to make a name for theirselves on the National and Global Stage.Rema is among the few that have done this, being one of the biggest artistes on the world right now. He has sort of Broken the barrier for Edo Artistes. What do you think about this? Does REMA’s Success inspire you? And how has his success changed the atmosphere in the Edo Music Scene?

“Yeah,Man,Rema is a f*cking Legend. What can I say? I mean he has done so much within such a Short time. Of Course he is a big inspiration for me,not just me but every single artiste from Edo state. We now know it’s Possible,Of course we knew this before but REMA’s Success has really Solidified it in our minds. If a Kid from Benin city can have one of the biggest songs in the world right now then it means I can,it means other artistes from Edo State can. Rema is Such a big inspiration and I’m proud of how far he has gone. You just have to have to see how other young upcoming artistes in Edo state admire Rema.Definitely one of the biggest artistes In the World right now and I hope to work with him someday.
